Shalaya Bryant was born and raised in Southwest Detroit. She was educated in the River Rouge School System and graduated from River Rouge High School. She received her certificate in Computerized Accounting from Wayne County Community College. Shalaya also attended Wayne State University where she graduated from the Labor Studies Program and received her Bachelor’s in Public Affairs.
Growing up, Shalaya had dreams of working in the healthcare industry. Her grandmother was one of the first African American Registered Nurses at Harper Hospital in Detroit, MI. In 2005, Shalaya entered the healthcare field as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She joined the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and was elected as the Chief Steward of her facility. After years of activism, Shalaya Bryant was elected as Secretary Treasurer of SEIU Healthcare Michigan. At the age of 27, Shalaya made history by becoming the youngest person to be elected as Secretary Treasurer.
Shalaya’s devotion to help others expanded into her community. Her continued activism enabled her to be elected as Precinct Delegate for her neighborhood. Shalaya Bryant was the recipient of the 2016 Rising Star Award from Wayne State University. She was honored by the Labor School for her work in the Labor Movement as an up and coming Millennial Leader. Shalaya’s continuous activism has led her to be an influential part of the Michigan Democratic Party, where she served as an Executive Board Member of the Black Caucus.
Shalaya Bryant is the influencer who can weave the fabrics of grassroots organizing, labor relations, and movement building. While speaking in front of thousands, Shalaya can capture the attention of the crowd. She has an eye for great talent and uses her leadership development skills to enhance, cultivate, and connect people. Her influential abilities allow her to work with a multitude of different people and empower them to become champions.
Shalaya always creates time for giving back and volunteering because she believes that when you are passionate about something, you are eager to do it. Shalaya has organized events and volunteered at Detroit's Capuchin Soup Kitchen, packed lunches for Meals On Wheels, donated water to Flint, MI residents, given blood to the Red Cross, provided school supplies for at risk youth, and served as hospitality to welcome parishioners during church. She is the person that expands your sphere of influence and makes connections among people.
